3269-prologue

I thought I was lucky.

A congressman at 27. A local representative, even. Among my peers, isn’t that quite an achievement?

“I swear to uphold the Constitution, to promote the freedom and welfare of the people, and to work towards the peaceful reunification of the nation…”

Even as I recited the oath in a trembling voice in the National Assembly, I could hardly contain my joy.

“…to perform my duties as a member of the National Assembly in good conscience, putting the national interest first…”

At my school reunion, my friends and I caused quite a stir, and I even got my older cousin a seventh-grade government secretary position. I even had a meal with the mayor of our town.

A four-year contract public servant, a walking constitutional body, a pillar of the separation of powers, the legislative branch. I genuinely felt I could die of happiness.

“…I solemnly pledge to fulfill my duties faithfully before the people.”

– Boom!

The ceiling collapsed, and something crashed down like a meteor.

“…I do.”
