Seok Go-jun was filled with confidence.
*I can do this.*
It was nearly thirty years ago. The great upheaval had left him an orphan, and it was then that he met Lee Jung-ryong.
“I’ve had my eye on you for a while. Will you follow me?”
“Me?”
“Yes. You have a remarkable talent.”
It was then that he finally understood.
How an orphan like him could grow up in the best environment with the best education. Who the anonymous benefactor he had never met was.
It wasn’t exactly like the fairy tale of the kind benefactor, but that was more than enough reason to follow him.
“Yes, sir.”
“From now on, call me Master.”
And so, everything began.
He had to mix with other children, learning movements and breathing techniques he had never seen before, but Seok Go-jun enjoyed it all.
His tiny hands developed blisters, which soon turned into calluses. They burst, healed, and toughened—just like Seok Go-jun’s life.
As he endured the pain, he grew stronger, eventually standing at Lee Jung-ryong’s right hand.
“From today, you’re the head of the security team.”
“Tell me what I should and shouldn’t do.”
“Follow my orders and never disobey them. That’s all you need to know.”
His master’s words were seared into Seok Go-jun’s mind.
He lived according to the path his master had set. Sometimes in the shadows, sometimes in the light.
He handled many tasks for Lee Jung-ryong and was always flawless.
Unlike the Hunters who often embellished their lives, Seok Go-jun hid his true abilities, quietly completing the missions Lee Jung-ryong gave him.
Even within the Ares Guild, everyone could only guess at his true strength—only Lee Jung-ryong knew it.
“Doesn’t it frustrate you?”
“What do you mean?”
“Being stuck by my side.”
“I’ve never thought about it.”
“With your skills, you could make a name for yourself anywhere.”
“I’m not interested in that. I will always stay by your side, Master.”
“Haha, you’re more reliable than ever today.”
And he was sincere. Though the entire security team had been trained by Lee Jung-ryong, none were as devout and loyal as Seok Go-jun.
His exceptional skills and unwavering loyalty were ironically the reasons he ended up disobeying his master’s command.
“If it weren’t for the special orders from Master… you’d be dead right now.”
“Master? Oh, Jung-ryong?”
“…”
“How’s Jung-ryong doing these days? Isn’t it about time he started looking at retirement homes?”
It was an unbearable insult. To Seok Go-jun, Lee Jung-ryong was more than a parent or master—he was akin to a god.
It was only natural that a fanatic would go berserk when their deity was insulted.
*This wretched bastard…*
The moment his master’s order to avoid conflict with the Peace Guild vanished from his mind, his fist was already engulfed in aura.
“If you think this will end like last time… you’re in for a rude awakening.”
Seok Go-jun already knew Jin Tae-kyung’s abilities from their brief encounter in the hospital a week ago.
But that was under his master’s orders. He hadn’t even shown half of his true power then.
Today, Jin Tae-kyung would pay the price for underestimating him.
*I’ll end this quickly, with everything I’ve got.*
He didn’t care about the aftermath. All he wanted was to exact brutal revenge on the man who had insulted his master. And Seok Go-jun was certain of his own strength.
*You’re dead!*
*Whoosh!*
His fist shot forward with terrifying force, moving at lightning speed.
Only three steps separated him from Jin Tae-kyung.
The sight of his enemy standing there with arms wide open, grinning, was the very definition of defenseless.
In the slowed-down world, Seok Go-jun’s fist was aimed straight at Jin Tae-kyung’s chest, while the latter didn’t move a muscle.
*It’s over, kid.*
Just as a triumphant grin spread across his face, it happened.
*Boom!*
A sound like the sky splitting open.
But Seok Go-jun didn’t hear it. Instead, he felt the overwhelming recoil from his fist and a searing heat that surged through his body like molten lava.
*What…*
Suddenly, his vision went white, and a pain like a scorching blade slicing through his insides overwhelmed him.
Without realizing it, something spewed from his gaping mouth.
“Urgh!”
*Splat.*
Bent over like a shrimp, vomiting violently, Seok Go-jun’s eyes widened.
Blood—everywhere. The ground was soaked in dark red blood, and among it were pale, unidentifiable fragments.
It didn’t take long for him to realize they were pieces of his own entrails.
*W-What… What is this…*
Staring blankly at the pool of his own blood on the ground, Seok Go-jun’s vision caught a glimpse of someone’s foot stepping into it.
“You said you’d make me regret it, didn’t you? Funny. I don’t see anything worth regretting.”
He didn’t need to look up to know whose foot it was, who owned that icy, yet blazing voice.
*How… How did I lose in a single strike…*
With just one clash, Seok Go-jun’s carefully built tower of 30 years crumbled into ash.
*How is this even possible…*
Seok Go-jun’s entire body trembled.
Pain?
No. What gripped him now was not pain but the same fear he had only ever felt from one person—his master, Lee Jung-ryong.
“Look up.”
It was that fear that grabbed Seok Go-jun by the hair, forcing him to lift his head.
His gaze traveled from the blood-soaked foot up a steel-like leg, over a powerful, animalistic torso of flexible, taut muscles. And then…
There were the eyes.
Amidst the faint darkness of the black forest, two blazing eyes stared down at him.
“Tell your master this.”
A hot breath brushed his ear as a whisper only he could hear followed.
“As long as I’m around, no one touches the Peace Guild.”
“You?”
Seok Go-jun’s eyelids twitched. His voice, hoarse and drenched in blood, spilled out between his lips.
“Who… are you…?”
“Me?”
The answer came not to his ears, but echoed inside his mind.
—I am the heir of the Fire King, the successor to the Fiery Flame. (TL Note: SHEEEEESSHHH)
The voice was like an eerie hallucination.
Seok Go-jun didn’t recognize it as telepathy, nor did he grasp the meaning behind the words.
Only one thought occupied his mind.
*A monster…*
The last thing Seok Go-jun saw was Jin Tae-kyung’s mischievous smile before his body crumpled like a rotten tree.
* * *
*Swoosh. Thud!*
A suffocating silence fell. No one dared to speak, no one even dared to move. Hundreds of trembling eyes scanned me up and down.
I glanced at Seok Go-jun’s unconscious body and muttered a brief comment.
“See what happens when you mess around? You’re nothing special.”
The air turned icy in an instant. As I looked around, I heard gasps from all directions.
One person’s reaction was especially intense.
“Association Head.”
“Ugh!”
The Central Association Head, Lee Woo-jung, flinched as he avoided my gaze.
“Did you call for me?”
“Why are you suddenly so polite? You were talking so casually just a minute ago.”
He stammered, his face pale.
“Wh-What do you mean, me?”
“Don’t you remember?”
“My memory isn’t what it used to be… I forget things all the time…”
“Oh, I see. So, you’ve already forgotten everything that happened between us today?”
“But judging by your expression, your memory seems pretty sharp?”
I didn’t think he was so slow that he couldn’t take a hint. If he were, he wouldn’t have made it to a position as high as this.
The Association Head quickly shook his head in denial.
“No, no, of course not! I’ll make sure to keep my mouth shut.”
“Keep your mouth shut?”
“No, I didn’t mean it like that…”
“The others with you seem to have memory problems too, right?”
“Y-Yes. Yes, that’s right. They all have short-term memory loss. Isn’t that right?”
The 200 or so Association Hunters who had entered the gate with their boss nodded frantically.
“Yes, exactly.”
“That’s right. I don’t even remember my own name.”
“…Wait, where are we? Who am I?”
Who was that last guy?
I barely resisted the urge to check his face.
“Well, that’s convenient.”
I smiled broadly, and the Association Head and the other Hunters forced awkward smiles in return.
Well, with so many witnesses, I don’t think I can really expect them to keep their mouths shut for long.
Now, the next step…
“Who’s in charge here?”
“That would be me.”
A sharp-eyed, middle-aged man stepped forward. He was an A-rank Hunter and a team leader from the Ares Guild.
He looked between me and the fallen Seok Go-jun in disbelief, then bit his lip.
“I don’t know what your business with Team Leader Seok is… but you’ve made a serious mistake today.”
Judging by his words, it was clear that he didn’t fully understand the situation.
I smirked and replied, “In life, things happen. Some good, some bad—no need to dwell on it.”
“Aren’t you worried about what the Vice Guild Leader will do when he hears about this?”
“Worried? No. Actually, I’m looking forward to it. Make sure to report everything to Lee Jung-ryong.”
My response startled the middle-aged man and even the other Ares Guild members standing behind him. I wasn’t sure if they were more shocked by how casually I referred to Lee Jung-ryong or by my calm demeanor.
But I was more curious about how Lee Jung-ryong would react once he heard the report.
*Our good ol’ Jung-ryong must be losing his mind.*
In this little drama, Lee Jung-ryong’s role was going to be the janitor—cleaning up the mess. He’d have to make sure no one outside this gate heard anything and silence anyone who might spill the beans.
*But to think he showed his hand just weeks after our last deal… He’s quite bold.*
The mere thought of how quickly Lee Jung-ryong seized the opportunity made my spine tingle. If I had actually died here, it would’ve been the end of the Peace Guild. Without me, the Peace Guild would’ve been no match for Ares—a giant.
*One thing is clear: in this fight, letting my guard down for even a moment could be fatal.*
This isn’t a battle where a ceasefire is an option—only the final victory matters. And my enemies will always be lurking, ready to strike at the first opportunity.
“Well, that’s that.”
At least for now, the immediate chaos had been sorted out.
Or so I thought.
Four pairs of piercing eyes were still locked on me, along with countless others demanding an explanation.
*Oh, right… I almost forgot about our own guild.*
In the midst of everything, I had overlooked something important. But how was I supposed to explain this? Where should I even start?
After a brief moment of consideration, I decided to start with the basics.
“I… I just went to take a leak.”
A stunned silence filled the air.
Finally, Song Yi spoke up in a voice I’d never heard her use before—soft and almost sweet.
“Tae-kyung.”
“Yeah?”
“Is it okay if I kill you?”
“…I’ll explain everything once we’re outside.”
Yeah, better to explain this somewhere else.
